“I have no doubt you were tempted,” Harry said. “But I don’t think he knew. I really don’t. He doesn’t have much of a hand in the day-to-day work of Aurors, you know. Krug may’ve had accomplices. In fact, I’m sure he did. Someone in our Ministry. He must’ve. And I intend to find out who it was.”

Snape rolled his eyes, almost audibly. Harry snuggled against him, shameless. “Don’t be angry. It’s not like you didn’t know how I was before all this.”

“Suicidal, you mean?”

“Heroic,” Harry countered. “And good and brave and –”

“Oh, do shut up.”

Smiling, Harry lifted his face. “Shut me up.”

Snape bent his head and covered Harry’s mouth, gentle and hungry at the same time, his tongue coaxing rather than demanding. Harry relaxed against Snape’s warm body, reaching up to twine his fingers through those conveniently long black locks and pull them closer together.

When Snape released him, Harry laid his head on the man’s chest again, Snape’s accerated heart rate beating against his ear. Harry smiled.

“Now that’s the usual hero’s reward.”

“An early death is the usual hero’s reward,” Snape said drily.

Harry shrugged. “Half the wizarding world has been expecting me to die for my entire life. I can’t worry about that.”

“No, worrying about things was never your strong suit,” Snape said. “That would be too much like thinking ahead.”

Harry chuckled. “That’s your strong suit, Professor.”

“Speaking of which,” Snape said, soberly. “You might have requested my assistance.”

“I thought of it,” Harry admitted. “But well, you’ve done enough – more than anyone – to fight Voldemort and his lackeys.” He didn’t think it would go over well if he confessed to the protective streak he’d developed concerning Snape. “Besides, if you’d rescued me, you’d never let me forget it.” Harry smiled, feeling almost drunk with weariness and contentment.

“Yes, you have forced me to respect your ability to get yourself out of trouble as well as into it,” Snape admitted.

Harry laughed softly, feeling himself drifting into sleep. An apology for that formed in his brain and dissipated as he dozed off.

Harry awoke warm, covered, comfortable. He blinked Snape’s bedroom – so he assumed – into semi-focus, saw the dark shape curled in a chair beside the bed, reading.

“You never did tell me what I owed you for saving my life,” Harry said, hearing his own voice blurred with sleep. He was still dressed, though barefoot, and had no memory of being put to bed.

Snape was good; he didn’t even start at Harry’s voice. “No, I didn’t, did I?”

Harry realized suddenly. He groped for his glasses, found them on the bedside table and put them on to squint severely at Snape. “You made that all up, didn’t you? You were never going to charge me anything.”

Snape glanced at him. “Presumptuous child.”

“But I’m right, aren’t I?”

Snape turned a page. “Consider your debt paid. You owe me nothing.”

Harry raised himself on his elbow, resting his head in his palm. “Devious bastard.”

Snape smirked.

“I owe you a lot,” Harry said seriously.

“I think we are even.”

“Um I feel like I should warn you,” Harry said. Snape finally looked at him and he felt his face heat. “I’m no expert at this, and I don’t know what to do, and I’ll probably screw it up, but there’s a pretty good chance I’m in love with you.”

His fingers danced nervously across the blankets until Snape caught his hand, holding gently yet inescapably, just as his eyes held Harry’s.

“Again,” he said, “I think we are even.”
